The Chuk Kam Jewellery Design Competition 2008 (Winning Designs & the Media Award)

Organized by the Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Association and sponsored by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the World Gold Council, the Chuk Kam Jewellery Design Competition 2008 had been held for the 12th year and 18 winning designs and the Media Award were announced on 4 March 2008. The prize presentation was held at the Gala Evening of the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, which took place on the same day.

The competition aimed to stimulate the creativity and raise the standard of craftsmanship of the Chuk Kam jewellery industry in order to meet the market demand, promoting Chuk Kam jewellery through innovative designs.

The competition was divided into three groups, namely, Open Group, Student Group and 18K Group. All groups were to highlight the idea of "Only Gold" of the World Gold Council with emphasis on the designing themes of "Blessings", "True Love" and "Glory".

Selection of design sketches was conducted on 18 September and 18 October 2007 and the selection of actual design pieces was held on 3 January this year.

The panel of judges comprised of four judges, including Ms. Dury Chin, Deputy of Creative of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council; Mr. Albert Cheng, Managing Director of Far East of the World Gold Council; Mr. Lawrence Ma, President of the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China Limited; and Ms. Olivia Cheng, former Miss Hong Kong.

Entries were judged and selected by their practicability and marketability, the flexible application of the properties of Chuk Kam, inspiration and creativity, craftsmanship and overall aesthetic presentation.

Highlights of this year:

  • In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, each winner received a cash award of HK$3,000.00 in addition to a trophy.
  • A new Media Award was added, which was selected among the winning pieces by the media by voting.
  • A sub-group was added under the 18K Group for pieces using Chuk Kam partly.
  • In addition to the categories of rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches/pendants, a new category for wearable alternative accessories was added.
  • All of the three winners of the Student Group came from schools in Mainland China.

The winning pieces will be displayed at the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, which takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 4 to 8 March 2008.
